Doubtless, with the Christmas holidays coming
up, you are scrambling to find activities to keep your kiddos
busy while they're out of school. You'll want to find the right
balance of arts and crafts activities, cultural outings and
Guitar Hero II, I'm sure, so let me make a suggestion: glassblowing.
Now bear with me—I realize that glass melts somewhere between
2,600 and 2,900 degrees, but don't let that put you off. Junior
can handle a hot glue gun, no? Same kind of thing. But since
the tools of the trade (furnaces, blowtorches, warehouse space)
are a bit of an investment, you'll probably want a preview
before you clear space in the playroom. Luckily, Vetro Glassblowing
Studio, 701 S. Main St. in Grapevine, is offering an opportunity
for you to test the waters with its weekend ornament-making
activities. Held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. every Saturday and
Sunday through December 23, the workshops will allow your kids
to start out slow by picking their favorite colors and applying
them to molten glass. An artist will ply the creation into
the finished product, a handmade Christmas bauble, giving you
the chance to evaluate whether or not Junior is ready for full-blown,
er, blowing. At only $25, even if you decide the kids are better
suited to Play-Doh and glitter, at least you got them out of
the house. And that's worth every penny. Visit vetroartglass.com
for more information.
Saturdays, Sundays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Dec. 8. Continues
through Dec. 23, 2007
