The combination of flaming torches, roaring furnaces and molten glass will all be fashioned into final beauty and power through the hands of skilled artisans this fall. Vetro Glassblowing Studio is launching the first annual “Celebration of Glass” in Grapevine, Texas. The event will take place November 22, 2008 in the historic district of Grapevine in the Heritage Center parking lot as well as inside the Vetro studio.

Vetro’s owner, David Gappa, has begun this bold initiative for several reasons. First and foremost, he wants to raise awareness among the general public and educate those within the North Texas area about the many varieties of hot glass art. Gappa also envisions a hub where glass artisans from all over the Metroplex and even slightly beyond can gather, work and create together. This art form, which has been around for thousands of years, is infused within every person’s daily life in ways ranging from science to medicine to utilitarian to pure beauty. This November, “Celebration of Glass” will increase an appreciation for such a crucial and intense form of art.

The event will showcase glassblowers creating large art glass décor from the furnace (final demo at 9pm), lampworkers creating art glass jewelry on the torch (4-6pm) and flameworkers creating advanced, detailed handblown sculptures (4-6pm). Glass masters Wil Menzies and Christian Luginger will be traveling in to demonstrate their skills to all the artisans as well as the general public. The Grapevine Bead Society will be showcasing their art glass jewelry in a silent auction (4-7:30pm), and firefan dancers will be performing during part of the event (4-4:30pm). Beginning around 7pm, Vetro will host its well-known “Truth or Consequences Auction” where the artwork either takes the highest bid or else gets shattered into pieces. “Celebration of Glass” will be open to the public and free of charge. It will also be handicap accessible. The event will take place at 701 S Main St, Grapevine TX from 4pm to 10pm.
